We did: Surfing is a brutal sport. Unlike its frozen equivalent, hockey, the ice doesn't exactly come up and kick you in the ass although you can leave that to the other players. The ocean is unpredictable and no one can guarantee a place short of the wave simulator at your local petridish water park to have clean rideable waves where you can learn to get up, and stay up, on a surfboard. We tried Costa Rica which definitely had its merits and I would recommend The Diria in Taramindo which had so much activity for beginners. Rincon however has really everything you need without the long plane ride and the annoying peddlers walking up and down the beach on the dark volcanic sand.
In 1968 the World Surfing Championship was held at Domes Beach in Rincon. Since then, surfers from around the world have been visiting Rincon. It has the vibe you want in a surf town, endless shabby 4x4's with boards strapped at every angle driven by mop headed surfers grinning from ear to ear. The different waves in Rincon accommodate different learning curves and styles, which makes surfing in there one of the most accessible surfing places in the Caribbean. Similar to Tortola, another great surf favorite of our where we would suggest Bombas in Apple Bay where the mushroom tea parties happen on a full moon and the rooms at the Sugar Mill are comfy and close to the surf.
Happily we found Paddle Diva/Rd2H, Gina is a longtime friend and one of the fittest families I have ever seen, so I am going to follow her lead any chance I get. Her company Paddle Diva has transformed the abs and minds of many of her followers.
Gina says, "Everybody can learn how to SUP – young and old, from the most athletic to the least. Using a one-bladed paddle while standing on a longer, wider board (with a bit more volume than a typical surfboard) you can be paddling and cruising along with about an hour of instruction. Proper paddling and more advanced board maneuvering techniques can be learned as part of an on-going instruction process but is totally optional, so unlike the more technical sports you can excel at stand up paddle boarding right out of the gate!"
There are a lot of instructors on the beaches so there is no shortage of help, we stuck with Rd2H because they were the most professional and they are paid by the hour. I suggest an hour lesson a day for kids with an instructor to keep them safe in the waters and to give them the Surf or SUP instruction they will need to feel confident in the waters.
